Definition: Sedation Dentistry
The term refers to a technique that uses sedation medication to help patients relax when undergoing treatment. The technique generally uses moderate sedation which means a patient will be technically awake but feeling relaxed, carefree, and insensitive to pain, without losing consciousness.
The type of sedation dentistry we use in Dr. Claire Benmergui Family Dentistry.
Sedation dentistry is usually classified based on factors like the sedation levels used which are dictated by a patient’s unique needs i.e., their anxiety levels, length of a procedure, personal preferences, health history, etc. In this regard, the main sedation options include:
1. Dental Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
This is undoubtedly one of the most popular types of sedation. As the name suggests, with nitrous oxide or laughing gas patients inhale the gas through a nosepiece or mask and enjoy a calming effect within 3-5 minutes.
Patients at Dr. Claire Benmergui Family & Cosmetic Dentistry Clinic enjoy controlled amounts of Nitrous Oxide sedation based on the procedure in question. When your treatment is over, we’ll give you pure oxygen to get rid of the nitrous oxide in your system.
Since laughing gas exits the body very quickly, patients who undergo dental procedures while sedated using nitrous oxide may be able to resume normal daily duties immediately including driving themselves home after treatment. This is also one of the most comfortable types and we are proud to offer it to all of our patients.
How Does Laughing Gas Work? What Will It Do?
Inhalation sedation via laughing gas works by slowing down the nervous system which induces a sense of euphoria and calmness. Laughing gas won’t make you sleep. You’ll still be able to respond to the dentist’s questions or instructions.
Contrary to popular belief, nitrous oxide doesn’t necessarily make you laugh. However, it triggers related emotions i.e., calmness, happiness, mild euphoria, and deep relaxation. You may also feel light-headed, tingly feeling (in your arms/legs), and heaviness.
Who Shouldn't Be Sedated Using Nitrous Oxide or Laughing Gas?
Most people (children to adults) are ideal candidates for sedation dentistry via laughing gas. The gas is generally a safe option, however, it’s not recommendable to children under 2 years or those with certain medical conditions, such as:
- Pregnancy
- Allergy
- Severe psychiatric conditions
- Nasal congestion
- With caution to patients with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), conditions that can cause upper airway obstruction
How Long Does Dental Sedation Last?
Laughing gas wears off the fastest (within minutes once a patient starts inhaling oxygen). This makes the procedure comfortable, relaxing and allows the patient to resume their normal activities immediately.
