Dental Cleaning in North York
Dr. Claire Benmergui
Family and Cosmetic Dentistry
The ADA (American Dental Association) recommends that you brush your teeth at least twice daily [1] and floss at least once. [2] However, while this is the recommended standard of oral care, you still won’t get rid of stubborn accumulations in the mouth i.e., tartar and plaque in the long run. That’s where professional dental cleaning services come in handy.
At Dr. Claire Benmergui Family & Cosmetic Dentistry Clinic, we pride ourselves in getting rid of those stubborn stains that your tooth brush or floss can’t reach. Visit us once or twice every year for professional dental cleaning in North York.
Book a dental cleaning appointment NOW! Alternatively, you can CALL: 416-226-2500, email our lead dentist, Dr. Claire Benmergui clairebenmergui@rogers.com or visit our dental office in person (Google Maps).
Benefits of Professional Dental Cleaning
Since dental cleaning is optional and not necessarily done because of an underlying dental disease, why should you seek the service from experts like us?
- Brighter smile and fresher breath: Dental cleaning gets rid of stubborn teeth discoloration, teeth stains, and other accumulations that comprise a healthy smile and cause bad breath.
- Prevent or treat gum disease: Dental cleaning removes dirt in hard-to-reach spots in the mouth. It also includes a thorough assessment of the gums for signs of periodontal disease.
- Prevent cavities: Plaque tends to erode tooth enamel in the long run causing cavities. A professional dental cleaning appointment at Dr. Claire Benmergui Family and Cosmetic Dentistry Clinic involves a thorough inspection of all teeth to ensure no issue goes undetected.
- Supports overall health: There is scientific research showing a close link between dental health and overall health. Dental cleaning lowers the risk of suffering from serious diseases i.e., heart disease. [3]
How is Dental Cleaning Done? What Does Dental Cleaning Entail?
First and foremost, you can expect a comfortable and painless procedure. We offer sedation dentistry services if needed to ensure unmatched comfort. Our professional dental cleaning services can be summarized as follows;
1. Dental Exam
Our service starts with a preliminary check of a patient’s teeth and gums. Our family dentists will perform an oral exam that starts by taking a patient’s full medical history as well as digital x-rays to analyze a patient’s bite and other jaw abnormalities or oral health conditions.
The exam will identify underlying issues i.e., crooked teeth/teeth misalignment, broken teeth, gingivitis (inflamed gums), early periodontitis (gum disease), potential tooth loss and other conditions that may require treatment first.
2. Teeth Cleaning
If you have any underlying dental disease that requires treatment first, we’ll proceed and create a personalized treatment plan. If not, we’ll proceed and clean your teeth. This cleaning process usually involves a gritty polishing toothpaste and electric toothbrush to remove any food particles. It may also involve flossing to remove some tartar and show patients how to floss effectively.
3. Teeth Scaling and Root Planing
This is a standard procedure used to remove plaque and calculus, which are responsible for causing gum disease. Teeth scaling is done using special tools that remove plaque buildup in between teeth and around the gum line. There is no dental pain and the result is a clean smooth tooth surface.
If there is plaque accumulation below gum pockets, root planing is done to remove the plaque buildup. The process can be done using a special scaler or running a jet-stream of antibacterial fluid to remove buildup below the gum line.
4. Fluoride Treatment
If there are signs of decay, dental cleaning may involve dental treatments i.e., fluoride treatment to kill acid-producing bacteria in the gums and teeth. The treatment involves application of a fluoride gel on the teeth for a few minutes before a patient’s mouth is rinsed.
5. Other Processes
Professional teeth cleaning can also involve recession analysis if a patient has a receding gum line. This process will inform the areas to focus on. If you have sensitive teeth, dental cleaning may involve sensitive teeth treatment using special rinses or toothpastes that reduce sensitivity. Dental cleaning also includes tooth polishing to offer a perfect finishing touch. Polishing also makes it harder for cavities to form.
Important: The above information summarizes professional teeth cleaning in general. The deep cleaning process can include/exclude some dental services or treatment options depending on a patient’s special needs.
