Mouthguards are valuable devices worn for various reasons that can help to protect the teeth during sporting activities or help deal with certain dental conditions. While there are over-the-counter mouthguards, they don’t offer the best fit and protection. That’s where custom-made mouthguards (made by a dentist) come in handy.
At Dr. Claire Benmergui Family & Cosmetic Dentistry Clinic, we pride ourselves in making custom mouth guards that meet the precise needs of our clients. Whether you need a custom mouthguard because you play contact sports or due to a dental condition, we’ve got you covered.
Are you ready to protect your teeth or deal with an underlying dental condition once and for all, book an appointment NOW or call us: 416-226-2500 or email our lead dentist – Dr. Clair Benmergui: dr.clairebenmergui@rogers.com. You can also visit our dental practice in person (Google Maps).
When Should You Get a Mouthguard?
Common instances where you need a dental mouthguard include:
- When You Play Certain Sports
If you engage in contact activities/recreational activities or play contact sports (such as rugby, basketball, ice hockey, football, martial arts, boxing, etc.) that involve physical contact with other people/athletes, and there’s a high risk of injury, you need a mouth guard.
Some non-contact sports i.e., baseball, and skateboarding with a high risk of accidental falls, collision, or being hit by gaming aids can also benefit from mouthguards.
- When You Have Certain Dental Conditions
Some conditions such as severe bruxism, TMJ disorder, and sleep apnea are managed or treated using mouthguards.
Bruxism (also known as teeth clenching or teeth grinding) is characterized by severe grinding/clenching of the teeth which increases wear and tear of the teeth and joints in the jaws. A mouthguard stops the grinding/clenching and also reduces discomfort.
TMJ disorder (Temporomandibular joint disorder) is characterized by a malfunction of the temporomandibular joint that connects the jawbone to the skull and allows proper movement of the jaw and surrounding muscles. A custom mouthguard can eliminate symptoms of TMJ disorder like jaw pain, limited motion, and clicking as well as protect the jaw.
Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder characterized by heavy snoring or irregular breathing. Effects include daytime tiredness and serious health problems like high blood pressure and heart problems if left untreated. Mouthguards can correct the disorder by “pulling” the tongue and jaw forward (while you sleep), keeping your airway open.
Dental trauma: If you have been a victim of serious dental injury, a custom-made mouth guard will offer maximum protection and stop further damage/injury.
Contact us if you fall in any of the above categories. Dr. Claire Benmergui and her experienced team are waiting to assess whether you need a mouthguard and/or other dental treatment options like dental implants.
Types of Mouth Guards
There are many types of mouthguards on offer largely based on their purpose and fit. The most notable include:
1. Night Guard Toronto
If you grind/clench your teeth during sleep, you’ll most probably need a night guard. This type of mouthguard is retainer-like with hard and soft plastic pieces covering the bottom and upper teeth.
Night guards cushion the teeth from the force produced by nighttime teeth grinding and clenching, preventing further damage and resulting problems like headaches and inflamed gums. There are different types of night guards depending on the underlying dental issue being treated. Find out more.
2. Sports Mouth Guard Toronto
If you play contact sports or other sports where the risk of dental injury is high, you need custom sports guards made.
3. Custom Mouth Guards
Mouthguards can also be classified based on fit. Custom-fit mouth guards are the best because they are custom-made from the dental impressions of a patient.
4. Over-the-Counter Mouthguards
As the name suggests, OTC mouthguards are bought in department stores, chemists, or sports shops. These mouthguards come in different sizes but they don’t necessarily fit perfectly and offer the best possible protection and comfort because they don’t consider a person’s dental impression.
Which Mouth Guard Should You Get?
Both nightguards and sports mouth guards can be custom-made or bought over-the-counter. However, we highly recommend that you get custom night guards or sports guards that are made specifically for your dental formula and underlying dental condition or activity.
