What is Periodontal Maintenance?

Periodontal maintenance (also referred to as root planning or periodontal scaling) can be defined as treatment for persons who have had periodontal treatment.

Periodontal maintenance is done as an ongoing treatment for periodontitis (gum disease), a disease characterized by inflammation and infection of gum tissues. Other signs of gum disease include bad breath, bleeding gums, and loose teeth.

Periodontal maintenance actively cleans out the tooth roots and other dental cavities to get rid of areas where the bacteria responsible for periodontitis can accumulate after initial treatment.

Purpose of Periodontal Maintenance

In simple terms, periodontal maintenance is a highly specialized dental cleaning process done to prevent the reoccurrence of gum disease in persons who have undergone periodontal treatment before. Periodontal maintenance is an important long-term dental health management component for anyone who has experienced gum disease.

While periodontal treatment is effective in dealing with the disease in the short term, periodontal maintenance ensures the disease doesn’t reoccur. In summary, periodontal maintenance does the following:

  • Actively removes bacterial plaque & tartar buildup
  • Reduces inflammation/gum infections
  • Maintains gum health
  • Prevents bone loss and tooth loss in adults

Who Should Seek Periodontal Maintenance? Ideal Candidates for the Treatment

As mentioned, anyone with a history of gum disease is an ideal candidate. The same applies to persons who are at a high risk of getting gum disease which includes (1):

  • Persons with poor oral hygiene
  • Persons in families with a dental health history of periodontal disease
  • Persons who smoke or have certain medical conditions i.e., chronic diseases like diabetes.

If you fall under the above group of individuals, call: (416)-226-2500 or submit an appointment request.

Bone grefting in a North York dentistry

Step 1: First Review

Our dental hygienist or lead dentist will examine your teeth and gums to assess visible tartar and plaque. The examination is thorough and also includes taking measurements of the depth of pockets between the gums and teeth.

Step 2: Dental Scaling

If there is tartar and/or plaque buildup, dental scaling will be done from below gum pockets and above the gum line using specialized dental instruments.

Step 3: Root Planing

A periodontal maintenance session at our clinic also involves smoothing out rough surfaces on the tooth roots to get rid of remaining tartar and plaque.

The examination

We’ll also polish the teeth to get rid of any remaining stains. Polishing also smoothens the teeth further. Our dentist or dental hygienist will also floss your teeth eliminating any debris trapped in-between your teeth. The session can also include aftercare tips and regular teeth cleaning procedures.

Periodontal maintenance should be done periodically, every three months. The frequency can however differ based on an individual’s needs: rate of plaque growth as well as response to treatment and personal commitment to good dental health practices.

Periodontal maintenance visits tend to be done quarterly because if treatment is delayed further, the formation of colorless film and congregation of periodontal pathogens can’t be effectively disrupted after that. (2)

What’s more, the risk of tooth loss (among other effects) is higher for those who don’t go for routine periodontal maintenance after receiving periodontal treatment.

Periodontal Maintenance Vs Periodontal Cleaning

You may be wondering how periodontal maintenance differs from deep cleaning (periodontal cleaning). The two can be compared in regards to the depth of the cleaning, purpose, and frequency.

  • Depth of cleaning: In dentistry, there are different types of cleaning. Periodontal maintenance is more intense than deep cleaning. It focuses on cleaning (periodontal pockets) below the gum line where deep cleaning may not reach.
  • Purpose: In regard to purpose, periodontal maintenance is done to prevent the recurrence of periodontal disease (gum disease). Periodontal cleaning is usually done to prevent tooth decay/cavities and other periodontal health issues.
  • Frequency: Lastly, periodontal maintenance is supposed to be done more times: 3 to 4 times a year while deep cleaning is usually recommended once or twice a year.
